Choosing Your Hotel at the Livigno Ski Resort

You’ve chosen a hotel at the Livigno ski resort. Now all you have to do is figure out how to get there. If you’ve selected a package deal, and transportation is included, all you have to worry about is not missing your flight or a train connection. You can’t fly directly to the ski resort area, and there’s no train station either, so you’ll need to reach the resort area by bus from a nearby airport or train station, or by automobile (not recommended, but if you must travel that way, bring along chains).  “Nearby” does not necessarily mean close by, as Livigno is somewhat isolated. Livigno is tucked away in a part of the Italian (Lombardy) Alps in the South Tyrol region, and is surrounded on three sides by Switzerland.

After a long day on the slopes you’ll have much to look forward to, ranging from relaxing in a hot tub, enjoying a great meal as only the Italians can prepare, or you can go shopping.

Booking Your Hotel

Booking a Hotel in Livigno Can Be a Pleasant Challenge

There are at least two things worth knowing a little about when booking a hotel in Livigno. First of all, you’ll want to know what it is that Livigno has to offer. You probably already do, or you would not likely be booking a hotel there. You may however be booking one because someone told you that the town of Livigno, the ski resort, and the surrounding mountains, are all well worth visiting. While it is indeed a small town, Livigno has become a prime European destination for those who like to ski, who are looking for a place to do a bit of duty-free shopping, or who simply enjoy being in the Alps, summer or winter.

Second, you want to know what a given hotel has to offer. Assuming you have an idea of what the area has to offer, you still want to book a hotel that enables you to best take advantage of those things Livigno has to offer. For example, does a particular hotel give discounts for ski lift passes, rental, or instruction? Does the hotel furnish free bicycles? A number of them do; obviously during the summer season and not in mid-winter. Does the hotel arrange hikes or mountain bike trips, or is the hotel staff more than happy to put you in touch with those who do arrange such trips?

Ask Plenty of Questions

When booking a hotel in Livigno, you’ll either want to arm yourself with facts or with questions. You can’t know everything there is to know about the 150 or so hotels that are located in and around this small town. The chances are good that your booking agent doesn’t have the answers immediately available either, but he or she should at least have the resources available to get answers to your questions.

The main problem you’re likely to face when booking a hotel in Livigno is one of information overload. There are almost too many hotels to choose from. You will probably be better off seeking a good hotel, since there are a number of 3-star and 4-star hotels in the area, than you would be in trying to find the very best hotel, in which case you would probably end up being booked into the most expensive hotel, which wouldn’t necessarily be the very best one, “Very best” is a somewhat subjective term, and often a matter of opinion.

Livigno is Different

Your booking agent may ask you if you want a hotel that is located in the city center, in the outskirts, or somewhat far away from the hustle and bustle. This is a legitimate question if you’re looking for a place to stay in London, Paris, or Rome, or even most medium-sized cities. If you are booking a hotel in Livigno, one on the outskirts would probably be no more than a 5- to 10-minute walk from the center of town. Livigno is not large. If you are booked into one of the hotels in the village of Teola, you will indeed be out of town, but still within a 15-minute walk from Livigno’s city center.

Ask about a finding a hotel that is within walking distance to the nearest ski lift, or finding a hotel where you can ski right up to the front entrance, and you will have narrowed your search from 150 hotels to about 80!

Make a List of the Features You’re Looking For

In short, booking hotels in Livigno Italy can be a problem, but it is a nice problem to be confronted with. The best advice you could have would be to look into features such as spas or wellness facilities, discount ski packages, or for that matter, discount hotel prices. There are apartments (ideal for families or groups) and bed and breakfast facilities (great for coziness) available as well, but you can’t go wrong by staying in one of Livigno hotels.

What to Expect in Livigno Hotels and Other Accommodations

Livigno, Italy is home to a destination resort, the Livigno Ski Resort. Because of the beautiful Alpine scenery, this little town located in an enclave that has been nearly swallowed up by nearby Switzerland is also becoming more and more of a summer destination. Added to the winter skiing and the summer scenery with its many hiking and biking possibilities, Livigno is well known as a place one can do their duty-free shopping.

The Number of Stars Isn’t Always Important

Destination resorts often feature 5-star hotels, or at least very expensive hotels claiming that distinction. In Livigno, you will find a number of hotels customers have given a 4- or 5-star rating, and for good reason. It would be more accurate however to say that Livigno’s hotels generally fall into the 3- to 4-star class. A 3-star hotel usually isn’t all that bad, and most of the Livigno hotels holding this high a rating should be pleasant places to stay in almost all respects. If you’ve come to ski, and you are passionate about the sport, a 1- or 2- star hotel might serve your needs perfectly well. There are those travelers who prefer staying in a clean hostel to staying in a hotel, and in the summertime, you can always bring a tent.

Livigno Hotels Have Much to Offer

What do Livigno hotels have to offer? The answer is simply that most offer just about everything the ski vacationer needs. When there is only a short walk to one or more lift lines you certainly can’t complain. The windows in many if not most of these hotels provide either scenic Alpine views or colorful views of the center of town and its many interesting shops. You can rent a room in a hotel that is comfortably nestled on a mountain slope that is only a hundred yards or so from the center of town. If you do choose one of the 4-star hotels you’ll likely find all the luxury you need. Most hotels serve continental breakfasts. These aren’t the cereal, toast, and pastry breakfasts you may be used to. These are Italian breakfasts, and if you haven’t had a genuine Italian breakfast before, you are in for a treat.

Lunch and dinner can be a treat as well and if you don’t care for what the hotel has to offer, you can always find a restaurant nearby that serves wonderful Italian meals and wonderful Italian wine. There are a number of hotels, however, that serve excellent 4-course Italian-style meals. Several top-of-the line Livigno hotels, which is to say those that deserve a 4-star ranking, feature spas and wellness facilities. One even has a swim-up bar if you are into that sort of thing. Another claims you can ski right up to the front entrance, although that is most likely a possibility with many of the hotels in the area. In fact, it’s hard to say where Livigno ends and skiing begins. Many of the hotels offer discounts on lift tickets, ski rentals, and even ski lessons if you choose to stay with them. Some, but not all, cut their prices during the low-ski season, which usually consists of the first and last months of the season.

Don’t Forget Summer

While the focus here has been mostly on ski vacation accommodations, it is worth mentioning that Livigno and the valley it is nestled in, has become a top-notch summer destination as well, where you can enjoy the fabulous scenery, go on hikes or treks (to Switzerland if you want to take the time) and test your skills on a mountain bike. All in all, this is a wonderful destination and you should have little trouble in choosing one of the Livigno hotels you would someday like to return to and would recommend to others.
